Get tested together, Get tested today; A message that has been resonating on our radios, and televisions in the last few months. But what is the importance of this message to the 85 percent of Zambians that do not know their HIV status? According to the United Nations General Assembly Special Session Zambia Country Report 2010, for the year 2009, a total of 1,050,137 people aged 15 years and older received HIV testing and counseling through any method or setting and know their results. This represents almost double the 511, 299 reported in 2008.

21 and living with HIV

Lweendo Mbulo is 21 years old and living with HIV. She has been living with HIV for the past two years. She found out about her HIV positive status after getting tested at a mobile testing centre while in the second term of Grade 12. “I wanted to know my status. I had been uncomfortable about myself and wanted to be at peace. I somehow expected a positive result,” she says.

Zero new HIV infections. Zero Discrimination. Zero HIV-related Deaths. That was the title of Dr. Michel Sidibe, the UNAIDS Executive Director’s 2010 World AIDS Day Message.
We today join the rest of the country and the world in commemorating this year’s World AIDS Day under the theme, Universal access and Human Rights.
